A question I get asked often is, ‘How did you start?’
Well, it definitely didn’t come naturally for me. But most times my answer to that question would be ‘I don't know, I just started creating something I had in my mind and it turned out pretty cool.’
From a young age there were multiple things i wanted to be when growing up, like a journalist, photographer, ballerina, designer, stylist or a singer…lol
I’ve always loved the idea of putting myself out in the world in whatever creative form there could be. I’ve been very privileged to have a creative mother who has always wanted for me to pursue something creative too!
When I was younger and my mom would still be at work, she would put me in an after-school arts & crafts activity group. Now, my drawing skills were most definitely not on Da Vinci or Picasso level… far from it. I wasn’t one of those ‘gifted’ kids that would awe you away with my ‘talent’, I kinda tried my best but even I knew I wasn't great at it, however I still continued anyways because it was fun.
Then, moving to Bali my mom used to run production for a few clothing brands based in the Netherlands and then eventually her own brand! Almost every day I would go with her on the road to source materials, check up on her tailors and just cruise around the island. At that time i was about 13/14 years old, i would mostly be sitting in the car and still not fully understanding what she’s doing, all I cared about was which Justin Bieber song i was gonna play next.
Up until I was around 17 years old, my mom pushed me again to do ‘something creative’ and since I loved fashion and having her knowledge on producing clothes, I decided to give it a shot and thought out a design.
I loved every step of the way from searching for inspiration, fabric hunting, meeting tailors and just gaining knowledge of it all. My mom helped me with a lot of decision making and I guess she was very happy that I was finally able to understand what she has been doing all these years and that I'm creating something for myself. Even up to this day she still helps me out and i'm very grateful for all her input and pushing her creativity on to me!
So I guess long story short. I gave it a shot, tried my best and it turned out pretty cool :)
