Let me tell you a little about how I design clothes!
First off, when starting a new design I only ever get inspired by hunting for new fabrics! For some designers, they like to start with sketching out an idea and then proceed to the choice of fabric. However for me, I have to see, touch and really fall in love with the fabric first and then i will start thinking of how i want to use this fabric and what I want to make out of it!
Going to fabric stores is one of my favorite things to do because i get to spark up new ideas, but of course it's not always a hit...
Once my eye catches a roll of fabric, squished between a thousands of other rolls, i'll get my hands on it and at that moment it usually clicks straightaway for me as to what i want to make out of it.
For sure, i try not to be too impulsive at times and i give myself a day or two, working out the design and really thinking about all the possibilities before buying the fabric.
There have been times where i just couldn't stop myself and bought the fabric immediately because it was too drop dead gorgeous and i just had to have it in my possesion, not knowing exactly what i was gonna make out of it.
Luckily, after a day or two i know what i can create with it, but some fabrics are still placed on the shelf for now because it's just not their moment yet, but it'll eventually come to life.
Once i have bought the fabrics, the brainstorming starts! A lot of questions come to my mind like, 'What kind of person will wear this?', 'Female, male, unisex?', 'Appropiate for a warmer climate or cold?', 'When will this person wear this?','What kind of feeling will this person have while wearing this clothing item?', 'Do I wanna wear this?'.
It's almost like creating a whole storyline, if you think about it.
Now that i know the direction of the design i get to the sketching part and start adding the smaller details like the accessories. What kind of zipper do i wanna use, the placements of buttons and pockets etc. It's all about the details that make the design.
A final few more shoppings to do and putting all the missing puzzle pieces together, i finally get to bring the items to my tailor and he starts working his magic... Bringing what was once an idea, come to life!
